Google Translate Working on Iphone and Ipod Now

If you ever felt that your iPhone (be it 3G or not) could be of more help to you when you’re in a foreign country, or if you simply need to translate something, Google has now optimized the Google Translate service to be used with Apple’s famous handset.

Of course, accessing the Google Translate website via the iPhone was always possible, but according to a recent post from the Official Google Mobile Blog, it “didn’t work that well” on the touchscreen device. Thus, two of Google’s developers have joined forces and came up with Google Translate for iPhone.

Built on the AJAX Language API, the Google Translate Web page for iPhone supports all the languages that are available via the regular online translation page. Even more, it automatically stores your translations on the iPhone, allowing you to access them every time you want, even without being connected to the Internet.

iPhone owners can access the enhanced Google Translate at this address – and it’s all free of charge, just like in the case of the desktop version of the website. Still, you should note that, since it relies on a Web connection when translating texts, the new iPhone optimized service might cost a few bucks for those who do not have an unlimited data plan with their mobile carrier. According to the Google Blog, in 1MB of data, you will get about 200 – 400 translations, which means that even if you translate a lot of text, it’s unlikely that you have to pay too much.

Sure, some might say that Google Translate is not at all the perfect translation machine, but it can definitely provide a lot of help when trying, for example, to decipher a Web page written in a language that you are not familiar with.

This being said, iPhone owners have from now on a friendlier translation tool to make use of. All they need to do is to access it in time of need. Oh, and it works with the iPod Touch, too.

Autism 'may be missed in girls'

Girls with mild autism are less likely to be identified and diagnosed than boys, a study suggests.

Researchers examined 493 boys and 100 girls with autistic spectrum disorders.

They found the girls showed different symptoms, and fewer signs of symptoms traditionally associated with autism, such as repetitive behaviour.

The researchers, who presented their work to a Royal College of Psychiatrists meeting, said this might mean cases among girls are missed.

Autism is thought to affect four times as many boys as girls - but the latest study suggests this might not be the case.

Most of the children featured in the study had been seen at the Social and Communication Disorders Clinic at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Additional cases came from Sunderland and Finland.

All the children were classified as "high-functioning". They did not have classic autism, but did have difficulties with socialising and communication.

Relationship obsessions

The researchers, who have yet to publish their research, found that the girls were more likely to have obsessional interests centred around people and relationships.

However, these interests were more likely to be acceptable to their parents, and therefore tended not to be reported to doctors.

In addition, these types of obsessions were less likely to be discovered using standard diagnostic questionnaires.

The investigators said more research was needed to analyse how autism spectrum conditions manifest differently in the sexes.

Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, an autism expert at the University of Cambridge, agreed.

He said: "This is an important clinical issue and there are too few studies addressing it.

"We shouldn't assume autism or Asperger syndrome will look the same in both sexes.

"There may be many factors leading to these conditions either being underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed in females, or leading females to require a diagnosis less often."

Judith Gould, of the National Autistic Society, said: "We hear from many women who have been diagnosed later in life.

"The way autism is presented in women can be very complex and so can be missed.

"It might be that due to misconceptions and stereotypes, many girls and women with autism are never referred for diagnosis, and so are missing from statistics.

"This may mean that many women who are undiagnosed are not receiving support, which can have a profound effect on them and their families."

Ms Gould said it was also possible that girls were better at masking difficulties in order to fit in with society.

"Characteristics such as shyness and oversensitivity, common to people affected by autism, are sometimes deemed to be typically female traits.

"However if a boy were to display such characteristics, concerns may be raised."

Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 Postponed to October 2008

According to Mozilla’s initial plans, the first Beta of Firefox 3.1 codename Shiretoko was slated for availability by the end of August 2008, but this is no longer the case. Firefox 3.1 will only be released in October this year. The beta code freeze for the successor of Firefox 3.0 was moved from August to early September and subsequently to the end of the following month. In this context, Mozilla will take over a month to deliver Firefox 3.1.

“As we discussed a bit at the development call, we’re going to be moving the code freeze for Beta 1 to September 30. This schedule adjustment will better allow us to incorporate feedback from the Alpha on exciting features like worker threads before Beta, and adjusts for some of the impact of MU on build and release resources,” revealed Mozilla’s Vice President of engineering Mike Shaver.

Following the availability of Firefox 3.1 Beta 1, codename Shiretoko will move to Beta 2 release which is currently scheduled for the end of October 2008. Until Beta 1 drops, Mozilla has yet to release the second Alpha for the open source browser. “Alpha 2 builds will be produced using the code from Aug 19, as before, and we should have a schedule for the build availability and release pretty shortly. (Likely around Sept 2, if you made me guess. Don’t make me guess.),” Shaver added.

On the other hand, Mozilla has started delivering Firefox 3.0.1 as a major update to Firefox 2.0.0.16 and will continue to replace version 2.0 with the launch of v3.0.2. Mozilla expects Firefox 2.0.0.16 and Firefox 3.0.2 to be launched simultaneously sometime in mid-September. In parallel, Firefox 3.1 Shiretoko is also being built with the first Alpha builds planned for the end of this week, or the start of the next.

Jubah Menghilang Segera Menjadi Kenyataan

Breast cancer vaccine hope raised

A new vaccine has completely eliminated a type of breast cancer tumour in tests on mice, say researchers.

The vaccine targets breast cancer caused by an excess of a protein called HER2 - and even destroyed tumours resistant to current drugs.

The US team said it might also be used to prevent initial development of the tumours in cancer-free women.

But UK experts warned the vaccine was at a very early stage, and it was not known if it would work in humans.

This is very early research that has only been carried out in mice so we don't actually know if it could be used in women.
Dr Sarah Rawlings
Breakthrough Breast Cancer

The study, by Wayne State University, appears in the journal Cancer Research.

HER2 receptors promote normal cell growth, and are found in low amounts on normal breast cells.

But HER2-positive breast cells can contain many more receptors than is typical, promoting a particularly aggressive type of tumour that affects up to 30% of all breast cancer patients.

There are drugs to treat this form of the disease, including Herceptin, but they do not work for a significant proportion of patients.

The new vaccine contains genes that produce the HER2 receptor, and a compound which stimulates the immune system.

Electrical pulses

The researchers used electrical pulses to deliver the injected vaccine into leg muscles in mice.

Once there, the vaccine produced a huge quantity of HER2 receptors which triggered a reaction by the animals' immune systems, and primed them to fight cancer.

The researchers also used an agent that, for a while, suppressed the activity of regulatory T cells, which normally keeps the immune system from over-reacting.

In the absence of regulatory T cells, the immune system responded much more strongly to the vaccine.

Then, when the researchers implanted HER2-positive breast tumours in the animals, the cancer was eradicated.

There were no sign of any side-effects.

Lead researcher Professor Wei-Zen Wei said: "The immune response against HER2-positive receptors we saw in this study is powerful.

"Both tumour cells that respond to current targeted therapies and those that are resistant to these treatments were eradicated.

"This may be an answer for women with these tumours who become resistant to the current therapies."

The researchers have previously developed a similar vaccine which is currently in early clinical trials.

They say this time they have fine tuned the process, and hope the new vaccine will be more effective.

However, Dr Sarah Rawlings, of the charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: "This is very early research that has only been carried out in mice so we don't actually know if it could be used in women.

"Much more research is needed to find out if it works, to either treat HER2 positive breast cancer or prevent the disease, and if there are any side effects."

Several other groups are also working on breast cancer vaccines that target HER2.

Valentino Rossi defies the rain in Indianapolis

Valentino Rossi moved closer to regaining the World MotoGP crown as he won the weather-ravaged round at Indianapolis, which was red-flagged eight laps early as the conditions deteriorated in the rain and high winds.

The Fiat Yamaha rider had worked through from fourth on the opening lap to pressurise local favourite Nicky Hayden after seven laps and, as the rains returned, upped the pressure to take the lead on the fourteenth.

"They were the worst conditions that I've raced in during my career," said Rossi, who bettered the record of 68 premier-class victories held by the legendary Giacomo Agostini with this success.

"For sure this is good for the championship," said Rossi who, with this seventh victory of the campaign increased his lead to 87 points over the defending champion Casey Stoner, who finished fourth. Rossi needs a top three finish in Japan later this month to clinch the elite crown for the sixth time.
